Katalin Schafer

Katalin Schafer biography

Schafer Katalin
Have the courage to follow your heart and intitution!

I was born as the third child of a Hungarian family. Surprising my parents right at the beginning, as they were expecting a boy. From a very young age I loved to be in the centre of attention, I liked acting, singing, dancing and being naughty. That's why my sister took me to a ballet school, hoping that they can provide me with a strong base for my ambitions. As the years went by, my curious nature has not changed at all! I have studied different styles, such as: jazz and latin dances.

When I was eighteen, I've come across belly dancing in Hungary. Six months later I have accomplished Raquia Hassan and Dr. Mo's masterclass, where I have fallen in love with this style. I have travelled a lot in Egypt and learnt more and more about belly dancing and arabic folklore dances.

At the same time I have accomplished a Costume Designer College for my dad's urge, who reckoned I should have a "proper job" too.

In 2004, three master teachers and I have established a dance company, called Art of Orient.

During this time, my experiences in regards of directing and choreography have deepened a lot and soon enough, I have established my own dance company with arab boys and hungarian girls. In the same year, I have come second at the Ahlan Wa Sahlan World Competition in Egypt and our oriental dance company has won awards in the best group and choreography category.

In this year a long process, a meaningful journey has begun that has effected my life on both professional and spiritual levels. I wanted to discover why I have chosen this path for myself, this very feminine style even though in my personal life, I was a bit of a tom boy. Perhaps my wide range of interest has motivated me to create my very unique, personal style. If I had to name the style I represent, I would call it Oriental Jazz, as it moves from classic music, through folklore to oriental cabaret. It took me a long time to accept that I didn't need to be an arabic princess, for I am Katalin Schafer, my unique self!

I believe that movement has its own language, that is the most honest in the world. Often, the way we move, tells things about us that we, ourselves may not even be aware of. I am aiming to bring these hidden things to the surface when I dance, to make the act deeper and more meaningful. My goal is to share this perspective, self-awareness and spiritual growth with my students.
